2020 Hockey Season : COVID-19 Update from LMHA
Submitted By BJ Morden on Tuesday, April 21, 2020
Dear Lefroy Minor Hockey Members,

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a truly unprecedented situation that affects us all but especially those involved in organized sports.  Our constant, weekly, routine of meeting up multiple times at an arena, indoor soccer pitch or gymnasium came to an abrupt and stark end.  This has created disappointment, stress, and uncertainty for everyone.

Our hearts go out to anyone who’s been impacted by the virus, either directly or indirectly.  During this time, we feel we must reach out and update you on how we are approaching the situation at Lefroy Minor Hockey. Like most organizations, we are doing our best to secure the health and well-being of our community, members and their families.   We are following the advice of our main governing body, The Ontario Minor Hockey Association, in which they wrote: “In light of recent events, the OMHA Officers have made the decision to immediately suspend all hockey activities.  We will be proactive in informing our constituents on all upcoming protocols and required actions as they become available.”

While we are abiding by the OMHA mandate and wait to gather more information from the OMHA, other organizations have decided to open their registration for the 2020 season.  We Board Members, in our March virtual meeting (video conference call), all decided that it would in the best interest of the members and the community to hold off on registration for now.  We have read the news and heard accounts from our friends and families about the unprecedented actions happening in the economy.   We know that many families are operating under reduced income situations and are working tirelessly just to keep the essentials coming in.   We are extremely mindful of this and we feel families should focus on their health, safety, and mental well-being during these tumultuous times and need not worry about hockey registration.

We are still planning for next year and Lefroy Minor Hockey is looking at a tentative July registration date; along with an option of a 6-month payment plan for families.   We will also be freezing our registration costs to the ‘Early Bird’ rates of 2019 for everyone this season and lowering the $200 dollar non-refundable registration deposit to a $75 deposit for payment plans.  We are also thinking about re-using as many of our jerseys from 2019 as possible so we can keep the costs low.   Moments like this remind us that we’re all connected.  We’re called upon to be our best selves; and with patience, understanding, and compassion we will get through this because this too shall pass.

Despite the many difficulties we all face, we at LMHA would like to reassure you that we remain fully committed to doing everything we can to support you through this difficult time, on behalf of the LMHA board we wish you well.  We will keep you all updated on future developments in the coming weeks.

We are all in this together; stay strong and healthy Hockey Family,

Sincerely, Lefroy Minor Hockey Board
